Abert's squirrel
Latin name: Sciurus Aberti
So why is the name Abert in the Abert's squirrel?
Well the Abert's squirrel was named after John James Abert.
He was a military officer and he was also a naturalist that found the Abert's squirrel.
The Abert's squirrel doesn't hoard food like most squirrels do. They instead find a tree and eat the sap, fungus, and pine cones.
Off of the tree they eat more fungus that they dig up, buds, and twigs.
They make nest very much like a bird's nest. Once the nest is built they find a mating partner. When the babies are made, that is what their life consists of for the next year. The mom keeps the baby warm while the dad searches for food. There are usually 4 babies i the nest at a time. Once the first babies grow up they have another 4 babies. They live around 5-6 years although some have lived up to 20 years! But usually only live about 5 years. They only make 2 litters of babies so about 8 of them per year. Wow now that's a busy mom!:D Think of how many grey hairs that mom will have! And they can't dye their hair! Poor them!! ;D
Hey are very good climbers! They can climb up a tree using their back feet only! I wish I could climb a tree at all!;D
Their most distinctive trait is their big and pointy ears. They shed a lot of their fur in the summer so they won't have those pointy ears in the summer but they'll still be big ears!
Here is my drawing of one of them.

Ha ha! That's a very interesting post! I guess that I'm lucky, as a mom, that I can dye my gray hair! It's really interesting that they don't hoard food like other squirrels. I learned a lot from this post, and your drawing is great!
Ha ha! Yeah I suppose you are in THAT way anyway.
Thanks mom:)
I love your drawing! Very cute critter.
