Roller Derby!

Yesterday I went to a practice for Roller Derby! It was so much fun, and that is why I'm doing a blog post on it. Anyway, the people there were very friendly, and really funny too!

Roller Roller Derby is a sport for girls. You ride on roller skates around a flat track and push other people down to get in front of them. Sounds like fun huh?? :D We didn't actually push people down and have the actual game practiced. We just practiced falls, stops, and had lots of fun. We did things that will help us in time to be good players.

When you are on a Roller Derby team or if you are planning on joining one in time then you can come up with silly names for yourself. Here are some of the names that my mom, dad, and I have come up with:
-Amy Pound! (As in the Doctors companion in Doctor Who.)
-Teenage scream
-Consistent pain
-Livid Coco
-Hurt in a skirt (this is already taken unfortunately)
There are more that we came up with too.

The point in this sport is to get more points as a team than the other team. You get a point when a jammer passes someone from the other team. They need to be really fast skaters to make it to the front of the line! In front of them are the blockers. They are also called the pack. The pack tries to push and ruin the chances that the other team's jammer will get to the front of the line. In front of the pack are the pivot people. Their job is to set the pace of the pack. They can't be more than 20 feet ahead of the pack. If they are then they would be considered out of bounds. On each team there are 1 pivot, 3 blockers, and 1 jammer.
This sport requires a lot of strategy! Not just strength.

Here's a drawing of where the different positions are on the rink:
