Why do dogs lick everything constantly?

There are so many reasons to why they lick non-stop. My dog Bodoni even chomps away at her feet! I know quite strange eh? Most likely it is because something is bothering them; but they might just be grooming themselves. Here are some ways to solve these problems. Although, I must say that there is no way to solve the licking problem completely. Also, be patient with them. If you are trying to get them to stop it might just take time to get it through their heads. Dogs can be quite stubborn sometimes!

If they are licking their body constantly they might just need a bath. After you give them their bath the next day or so they will lick like crazy; this is because, just like us they like to brush their hair. It doesn't feel to great if it is spiking up in different directions. To help them with this problem brush their hair after the bath and in between baths.

A reason they might be licking their feet is because they have mud in between their toes. You can get a wet wash cloth and wash their feet with that. If they hate to have their feet touched then you can get water in a cup and pour it on their feet. Make sure to especially get in between their toes.
They might be licking their feet because their toe nails need to be clipped; in that case just clip their nails. A way to make clipping their nails easier is to clip one paw a week starting Monday every week. This makes the process less miserable for all of us. Make sure to end clipping their nails with a smile. Give them a small treat, play with them, pet them, give them a walk, play fetch, etc.

If they are licking you it is best if you just tell them "No!"  not in a whiny way but like you are their leader. Because that is how you want to come across to them. This will make them feel like they don't have to protect themselves because they have you. This will also help cut out all the barking. If saying "no!" doesn't work you can spray mint breath spray in the air in front of them. Make sure it doesn't get on their mouth or in their eyes. Just the smell will get them to back off. Water may work too. But always remember that this is a sign of affection and love. I would let them have a few licks. :)

If none of this works they might be allergic to what you are feeing them. Lots, and maybe even most dogs are allergic to wheat, soy, corn, and grains too. So try to find food for them that doesn't have soy, wheat, or grains and that aughta work well. There are plenty of dog food brands. These website have good choices:

If none of that works then they might have a health problem and you should take them to the vet and explain what they have been up to.
