Time zones

How time zones work:
Everyone measures the time by where the sun is in the sky. When the sun is at its highest point it is noon. There are 24 hour in a day so there are 24 different time zones. When you move from one time zone to the next the time changes by an hour. This is because the sun will come to its highest point a hour later. If you travel East you will move a hour forward. If you are traveling West you move a hour backward! This is because the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
Example:
Here in New Mexico it's 5:00 pm. Between New Mexico and Philadelphia the time zone changes by 2 hours. What is the time in Philadelphia?
It's 7:00 pm! That's because Philadelphia is East to New Mexico and the sun rises in the East. Since Philadelphia is to the East of New Mexico Philadelphia will get the sun before us.
Why we have time zones:
If we didn't have time zones every town would have a different time! And that obviously causes conflict just calling your friends!
So, we have time zones so time is less confusing. So it's easier to make calls, easier to call people without having to worry about what time it is there.
Why time zones got started:
Before 1883 we didn't have time zones and when people got on train and went somewhere else they got really confused about what the time was! They had to come up with a way to get everyone to agree on a time. So they can up with time zones!
Thanks for reading! I hope you learned something!
